J-T Plants:

Joule Processing offers four standard sizes of Joule Thomson (J-T) Plants. The proper plant is determined per the customer’s specifications. See the link below for the JP customer specification sheet.

                          Joule Processing Standard J-T Plants:

             Unit JT-2          1-2 MMSCFD

             Unit JT-5          2-5 MMSCFD

             Unit JT-10        5-10 MMSCFD

             Unit JT-20        10-20 MMSCFD

Joule Processing strives to keep units in stock for fast deliverability. JP will size the appropriate model unit based on the customer’s gas flow rate, pressure, temperature, and composition. JP standard JT Plants are skid mounted and are loaded and off-loaded from a flatbed truck. Each model unit is designed with three flanged customer connections pre-piped to the edge of the skid; gas inlet connection, gas outlet connection, and liquid outlet connection. All model units have two optional methanol injection ports for low temp refrigeration.

What is a J-T Plant?

A Joule-Thomson (J-T) Plant is a self-refrigeration plant that uses a drop in gas pressure (gas expansion) to cause a gas chilling effect. Their purpose is to condense heavy hydrocarbons out of the gas to meet a certain pipeline gas specification. Pipeline gas specifications range from 10ºF – 40ºF hydrocarbon dew point, and many times are given as a measurement value of gallons per thousand (gallons of pentane + per thousand standard cubic feet, or GPM C5+). The more heavy hydrocarbons contained in the gas, the higher the GPM value.

J-T Plants vs. Refrigeration Plants

JT Plants are used in place of a standard refrigeration plant because they are simple, much less expensive, and easy to install. There is no electricity required and there are no moving parts. They are many times the more viable option, especially if there is adequate pressure available for a drop in pipeline pressure. Joule Processing will evaluate a customer’s particular scenario to determine the most cost effective and practical option.
